The Game of Lacrosse

Lacrosse, considered to be America's first sport, was born of the North American Indian, christened by the French, and adapted and raised by the Canadians. Modern lacrosse has been embraced by athletes and enthusiasts of the United States and the British Commonwealth for over a century.

The sport of lacrosse is a combination of basketball, soccer and hockey. Anyone can play lacrosse--the big or the small. The game requires and rewards coordination and agility, not brawn. Quickness and speed are two highly prized qualities in lacrosse.

An exhilarating sport, lacrosse is fast-paced and full of action. Long sprints up and down the field with abrupt starts and stops, precision passes and dodges are routine in men's and women's lacrosse. Lacrosse is played with a stick, the crosse, which must be mastered by the player to throw, catch and scoop the ball.

Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States. Youth participation in the sport has grown over 500% since 1999 to nearly 250,000. No sport has grown faster at the high school level over the last 10 years and there are now an estimated 200,000 high school players. Lacrosse is also the fastest-growing sport over the last six years at the NCAA level, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. There are more than 500 college club programs, including nearly 200 women's teams that compete at the US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates level.    

Marlborough-Hudson’s Lacrosse Organization

Marlborough-Hudson Youth Lacrosse was established in 2003.  The purpose of the program is to introduce the youth of Marlborough to the game of lacrosse and develop a love of the game through positive coaching, player instruction and a safe and fun environment for all. 

The lacrosse program is organized and run by an Executive Board, Committee Chairs and other volunteers as needed.  The membership of Marlborough-Hudson Youth Lacrosse consists of parents and players in good standing as well as the Executive Board.  As a parent member of Marlborough-Hudson Youth Lacrosse you are invited to attend the annual meeting held each year to nominate, cast your vote or volunteer to hold a position on the Executive Board or one of the standing committees. Members of Marlborough-Hudson Youth Lacrosse are encouraged to be an active part of the lacrosse community by attending games, participating in social events and volunteering. 

Marlborough-Hudson Youth Lacrosse is a member of Massachusetts Bay Youth Lacrosse League.  As a member of MBYLL, we follow their required guidelines for age groups, league rules and men’s lacrosse rules.  For more information on these guidelines you may visit MBYLL @ www.mbyll.org.
 
Every player and coach is required to be a member in good standing of US Lacrosse.  Membership in US Lacrosse affords both the player and the program additional insurance. No player will be permitted to take the field for practice or play if their membership is not current.  Membership for players is not included in the registration fee.
